The United Nations (UN) has projected 3 scenarios for our future global population according to the fertility rates. With the ever increasing global population, there comes a greater need for increased livestock production to feed the world. With data from United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) and Food and Agricultural Policy Research Institute (FAPRI), livestock production is projected to increase from 220million metric tons in 2008 to 250million metric tons in 2018. Additional Information about projected livestock production, milk production and per capita meat consumption are provided below.
The US livestock production is projected to increase to feed the world's growing population
The graph on the left shows that per capita meat consumption for Broiler Chickens will be rapidly rising while the per capita meat consumption for Beef & Pork will decrease. This could be due to the increasing availability of Broiler Chickens, which are cheaper and easier to farm
Even though the total milk cows fell, the output per cow increased and the total milk production increased. We attribute this increase to GM feed made available to the cows and intensive factory farming methods
